MPOX Concerns Continue in the US

As MPOX continues to affect people in the community throughout the US, is it important to stay vigilant. Being aware of the symptoms and knowing the appropriate actions to take can keep you and others healthy.

SYMPTOMS:

  • Early symptoms may include fever, low energy, swollen lymph nodes, and general body aches.
  • Within approximately 3 days, a rash or sores may develop. These can resemble pimples or blisters and may be painful and itchy.
  • The rash or sores can appear anywhere on the body, including near the genitals or anus.

IF SOMEONE HAS BEEN EXPOSED:

  • Get Vaccinated: If someone has been exposed but hasn’t yet developed symptoms, advise them to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The vaccine is most effective within 4 days of exposure and may still provide some protection if given within 4-14 days.
  • Take Precautions: Encourage them to monitor for symptoms and consider avoiding close contact with others for 21 days post-exposure.
  • Get Tested: If they notice any rash or sores, advise them to get tested for Mpox immediately.

IF SOMEONE HAS BEEN INFECTED:

  • Seek Treatment: Most cases are mild and self-limiting, but antiviral treatments like tecovirimat (TPOXX) may be necessary for those who are severely ill or at higher risk.
  • Prevent Spread: Advise them to isolate until the rash has healed, clean and disinfect shared spaces, and notify any close contacts. They can use TellYourPartner.org for anonymous notifications.
